This workshop will be hosted by the Portsmouth Arts Guild on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. We will be together for a day of plein air painting in a beautiful location somewhere on the island (location will be given to participants). Here is an excerpt from the class description:

“Painting from life outside can be overwhelming. There is so much information and stimulation from all the elements. But, as a landscape painter, nature is the best teacher we can find. We will venture outside during this workshop and focus on finding simplified compositions…”

This online workshop will be offered every Tuesday through the month of September.

September 3, 10, 17, 24

11:00 am - 1:30 pm EST (Recordings will be available after each class and for at least 4 months after the end of the workshop)

During this workshop we will focus on painting clouds and skies, diving into design, working in layers, simplifying shapes, connecting the land and the sky through composition, etc… Each class will offer a presentation to discuss these topics and more. There will be at least two demos in each class to illustrate the topics discussed. There will be assignments given each week that participants can complete and upload to a group forum where they can receive weekly feedback. I will also give in-class critiques each week.

This workshop is for oil painting, but if you prefer other mediums the principles will apply. If you’ve been interested in learning more about enhancing your study of clouds in your landscape painting, please join me for this class.

During this one day workshop we will be working in the Bristol Art Museum’s art studio as we learn how to design a landscape painting using a photograph as a reference. I will share my process of looking for shapes and values in photographs, discerning how to edit a photo, creating value sketches from them, and then translating them into paintings.

This class is for oil or acrylic painters; intermediate experience recommended. Erin will be teaching using oils, but the basic principles of value, shape, and color will apply across other painting mediums.

Please contact the museum to inquire about registering for this workshop: classes@bristolartmuseum.org

A one day workshop painting in one of the quaintest and loveliest towns in Rhode Island. We will gather at Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island for a one day plein air workshop on Saturday, October 12th. I have reserved a large pavilion where we can set up a homebase with our materials, etc. We will have access to the pavilion throughout the day in case of rain. But we will be venturing out into this beautiful park that is surrounded on all sides by water views of the Narragansett Bay and marshy fields. There are large fields and groves of trees throughout the park, which will most likely be displaying all their autumn colors. We are minutes away from a delightful downtown with a vibrant main street, delicious restaurants, and ample New England charm.

I hope you will join me for a wonderful day of painting and learning!
